This workshop will deal with the slab built and wheel throwing objects and some of the needs for transferring images from paper to clay forms.
DAY ONE: create a wheel thrown and slab-built form that are suitable for image transfer. Review options and construction methods. Discussion about the nature of the ceramic form and the variety of slab construction methods that are applicable for this process. Make one of your designs a positive negative image. the other a simple object
Tools needed - Fundamental clay working such as: a needle tool, metal & wood ribs, toggle line, sponge etc. Additional tools for laying out your design – tape measure, compass, protractor and a 45-degree triangle . You will need these for subdividing and laying out the surface of your ceramic forms. Cover work so it will be leather hard for session two. For the second session have a geometric design and a drawing of a simple object that can be used in multiples ( bird or frog turtle , keep it simple and line only.). You might want to make copies of your drawing in a few different sizes. ( scan and print)
DAY TWO: Begin by dividing the surface of your forms into two or more sections. Apply a slip to the surface of one of your ceramic forms. Orientate your drawing on the surface of your ceramic form. Transfer the drawing to the clay object. Etch the transferred image into the clay. Options for finishing the work. Using a clay slip or ongobe for one of your designs (positive /negative.)
About William Tersteeg
William Tersteeg, ceramic sculptor, lives in North Abington Twp. Pennsylvania. He has been creating sculpture in clay for the past 40 yrs. His work is both wheel thrown and hand built and reflects the environmental themes of his hometown and places he visits.
After earning his MFA in ceramics at Southern Illinois University, Tersteeg participated in dozens of exhibitions, including many national and international shows. The award-winning ceramic sculptor sees himself as a visual poet, who, like other artists, creates from what he is. Tersteeg has served as owner of the Crystal Earth Gallery, located in North Abington Township, Pa., since 1990. He is our 2022 Artist in Residence.
