Workshop Information
“One nation under God” is reflected by the awe-inspiring landscape paintings of the Hudson River School that helped define a national identity during the antebellum. In the years following, critics dismissed the works as primitive and provincial only to enjoy a renewed appreciation in the 20th century. This first fraternity of American landscape artists was not a school nor provincial and shared much of the ideals, conflicts and concerns of today. Grappling with a divided country and concerns over the environment, their paintings both celebrated as well as foreshadowed the effects of progress and American expansionism. They were instrumental in the establishment of the first national parks and considered to be America’s first conservationists.
Join Andrea in a series of lectures illuminating the journey of these once forgotten, uniquely American landscape paintings that capture the spirit and beauty of America.
About the Instructor
Andrea Carnick, a British born fine artist with a lifetime of appreciation for art, began her curiosity and admiration for artists and their works as a child in books and the museums of England. She went on to study Art History, graduating with a BA from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Not content with learning the “why” of art processes, she learned the “how” during her Bachelor of Fine Art studies, graduating in 2009 from the University of Toledo. She is now a practicing artist living in Corpus Christi who loves to share her knowledge and enthusiasm for art.
